Santa Claus and a small child share the frame in this embossed postcard, a style that was especially popular in the early 1900s, when printers used raised relief and bright inks to give holiday cards a tactile, almost sculptural quality. The title points to Clement Clarke Moore's 1823 poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas," which did much to shape the modern image of Santa as a jolly, sleigh-riding gift-giver arriving on Christmas Eve. Cards like this one were mailed in large numbers during the era, so they capture how the holiday's sentimental traditions were being spread to households across the country. Worth noticing is the embossing itself, which adds texture to the costume and background and was a costly finish that made these cards feel special to the people who sent them.
