Holly sprigs frame a young girl on this Merry Christmas postcard, a motif that was everywhere in holiday greetings of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Postcards of this kind were cheap to print and easy to mail, and they helped make the picture postcard a popular way to send seasonal wishes. Holly, with its red berries and evergreen leaves, stood for cheer and endurance through winter, so the pairing of child and foliage was a deliberate way to suggest innocence and good tidings. Look closely at the lettering and border, which often reveal the printing method and the era.
