Pope Leo XIII, born Vincenzo Gioacchino Pecci, was elected pontiff in February 1878, and this color print portrait dates from that same year, when his papacy was just beginning. Leo XIII would go on to lead the Catholic Church for more than 25 years, until his death in 1903, and his name is closely tied to the 1891 encyclical Rerum Novarum, which addressed the rights of workers and the conditions of industrial labor. Portraits of newly elected popes were widely reproduced in the late nineteenth century, so a print like this one offers a glimpse of how the new pontiff was presented to Catholic audiences around the world.
