A village of steep-roofed houses and a white church tower climbs a mountain slope, and a line of robed figures moves along the road below it. The scene is typical of Catholic alpine communities in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when processions marked feast days, harvests and blessings for the fields and livestock. Such processions were often the most visible public events in a valley village, bringing the whole community into the street behind the clergy and banners. Look at how the church sits above the houses, a reminder of how closely faith, farming and daily life were bound together in these mountain settlements.
