The church and the boy share this frame on the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation in western Nevada, home of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. The image comes from the Pyramid Lake Project and was later published in *Eyes of the Nation*, a 1997 visual history of the United States. Its subject is the place where Christian mission churches and Paiute religious life exist side by side, a tension that runs through reservation history since the nineteenth century. The lake itself has long been central to Paiute identity and spiritual practice, so the picture invites a look at how faith and community are expressed there in the 1990s.
