The Metropolitan Methodist Episcopal Church is the subject here, a building that served one of the more prominent Methodist congregations in the national capital. Lithographer L. Crépon drew the image on stone, and the color print was produced at the Philadelphia steam lithographic press of P. S. Duval & Co., one of the leading lithography firms of the 1850s. Views like this one were often sold to congregations, members and visitors as keepsakes, and they record how a church presented itself to the city in the years before the Civil War. The print's copyright notice names Dr. William M. D. Ryan, whose role is recorded here but whose connection to the church is not described in the record.
