A young Paiute boy stands before a mission church on the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation in Nevada, a pairing that places faith and childhood side by side in one community. The Northern Paiute have lived around Pyramid Lake, a remnant of the ancient Lake Lahontan, for centuries, and Christian missionaries worked among them during the 19th century. The photograph dates to about 1991 and comes from the Pyramid Lake Project. It later appeared in *Eyes of the Nation*, a 1997 visual history of the United States with commentary by Alan Brinkley.
