Unlike the street scenes and landscapes on this board, this glass negative reproduces a painting titled *Immaculate Conception*, which shows the Virgin Mary as the Catholic doctrine describes her, conceived without original sin. Pope Pius IX formally defined that teaching in 1854, and Spanish painters such as Murillo made the subject famous, usually showing Mary with clasped hands, a blue mantle, and a crescent moon at her feet. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made many reproductions and views in the early 1900s, produced this 8 by 10 inch plate, and the State Historical Society of Colorado gave it to the collection in 1949.
