Among the religious prints on this board, this one stands out for its pairing of scripture with a reform cause, setting the Bible beside the temperance movement. Nathaniel Currier issued the lithograph in New York sometime between 1835 and 1856, a period when temperance grew into a broad network of churches, local societies and pledge signers. Hand coloring, usually added by workers after printing, was common on Currier's sheets and kept them inexpensive enough for homes and meeting rooms. The print shows how evangelical reformers used popular imagery to argue that sobriety and scripture belonged together.
