Its title appears in French, Spanish and Portuguese, which suggests Currier & Ives aimed this hand-colored lithograph at Catholic buyers across the Americas, not only English speakers. The Immaculate Conception, the belief that Mary was conceived without original sin, was declared dogma by Pope Pius IX in 1854, shortly before the earliest date this sheet could have been made, and the subject became a popular devotional image for American printmakers. The firm published the sheet in New York sometime between 1856 and 1907, and it is listed as no. 3266 in the Gale Research catalog of Currier & Ives prints.
