The print records a rare moment in American church history: Archbishop James Roosevelt Bayley of Baltimore placing the red berretta on Archbishop John McCloskey of New York inside St. Patrick's Cathedral on April 27, 1875. McCloskey was the first American elevated to the College of Cardinals, which made the ceremony a notable event for New York Catholics. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for its popular lithographs, issued this hand-colored sheet soon after the event. The cathedral on Fifth Avenue was still unfinished at the time, and the scene shows how quickly the city's publishers turned current events into printed images.
