Most of the firm's output was scenes of farm life, sport, and current events, so a sacred subject stands out here. Titled in both English and Spanish as *La Sagrada Familia*, the print shows Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus in a domestic setting, a theme long popular in Catholic devotional art. Nathaniel Currier and James Merritt Ives sold inexpensive lithographs to middle-class American households in the nineteenth century, and such domestic religious images were often hung in the home for private devotion.
