The title, "Holy Virgin, pray for us," borrows a line from the Hail Mary, the Catholic prayer that asks the Virgin Mary to intercede for believers. That makes this lithograph a devotional image rather than a scene of place or event. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that printed it around 1876, sold inexpensive color lithographs to a broad middle-class public, and its religious subjects were a small part of a catalog dominated by landscapes, sporting scenes and domestic themes. The print is listed as number 3086 in the firm's catalog raisonné, compiled by Gale Research and published in 1983, which is the standard reference for identifying and dating its output.
