A bilingual title sets this print apart: "The Holy Eucharist" appears alongside "La Sagrada Eucaristia," which suggests a buyer beyond English-speaking Protestant households. Nathaniel Currier published this hand-colored lithograph from his New York shop around 1848, when the firm produced inexpensive sheets in large numbers for a broad market. The Eucharist, the Communion sacrament central to Catholic worship, was an unusual subject for a publisher better known for news events, sporting scenes and sentimental genre pictures. It is catalogued as number 3076 in the Gale Research catalog raisonné of the firm's work.
