Tucked into the mountains of West Cork, the holy well at Gougane Barra takes its setting from the lake where St. Finbarr, patron of Cork, is traditionally said to have founded a hermitage in the sixth century. Pilgrims have long visited the well and walked the sacred ground around the lake, a devotion that continued through the centuries when Catholic worship was restricted. The New York firm Currier & Ives produced many scenes of Irish landscape and religious life, likely for buyers with ties to Ireland. The title spells the saint's name as "Fineen," a local variant of Finbarr.
