Few places in Jerusalem carry as many layers of devotion as the tomb traditionally identified as the burial place of the Virgin Mary, set in the Kidron Valley below the Old City walls. Christian tradition holds that she was laid to rest there, and pilgrims have venerated the site for centuries, with a church built over it by the Crusaders in the twelfth century. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued inexpensive lithographs for a broad home market from the 1830s until 1907, turned sacred subjects like this into affordable images for parlor walls, and hand coloring gave the print a warm, devotional look.
