Currier & Ives produced this hand-colored lithograph of the Virgin and Child with a trilingual title, French and Spanish alongside English, a sign that the firm was pitching its religious prints to immigrant and Catholic buyers in a multilingual American market. The print comes from the firm's long run in New York, which ran from the 1850s into the early twentieth century, when lithography allowed inexpensive devotional images to reach ordinary households. Its hand-coloring, applied by workers at the shop, shows how these prints were finished by hand to look more like paintings. Catalogued as number 6991 in the Gale Research raisonné, it is a useful example of the firm's religious output.
