This broadside is headed *Tristisimas Lamentaciones*, or "most sorrowful laments," and centers on the Virgin of Guadalupe, Mexico's most beloved devotional image, whose apparition at Tepeyac hill near Mexico City is traditionally dated to 1531. Cheap printed sheets like this one, often combining a devotional picture with verses meant to be read aloud or sung, circulated widely among ordinary worshippers. Printed in 1915, it dates from the height of the Mexican Revolution, when the country's political and religious life was in turmoil and popular devotion took on added urgency.
