The Spanish half of the title, *Na.Sa. de Transito*, names the devotion behind the scene: Our Lady of the Transit, a Spanish-language name for the Virgin's passing and assumption into heaven. Nathaniel Currier issued it in New York in 1848, when his firm was producing many religious and sentimental subjects for ordinary buyers, often adapted from European devotional pictures. Like other lithographs of the 1840s, this impression was hand colored, so each copy was tinted separately and no two look exactly alike. The bilingual title suggests the print was meant for Spanish-speaking Catholic customers as well as English speakers.
