What sets this lithograph apart is its bilingual title, given in both French and Spanish as "Sacre Coeur de Jesus" and "Sagrado Corazon de Jesus." Nathaniel Currier issued it in New York between 1835 and 1856, before his firm became Currier & Ives. The subject reflects devotion to the Sacred Heart, an image of Christ's heart as a symbol of divine love that spread widely through Catholic communities in the 19th century. The two languages on the sheet suggest the printer hoped to reach buyers who read French or Spanish, a sign of the varied populations of the period.
