The title is a devotional petition, "Heart of Jesus, reign thou ever in my heart," addressed to the Sacred Heart, the Catholic devotion to Christ's heart as an emblem of divine love that was widely practiced in the nineteenth century. Published in New York around 1876 by Currier & Ives, a firm known for inexpensive lithographs sold to a broad American public, the print reflects how such religious sentiment reached ordinary homes. It is recorded as no. 2996 in the firm's catalog raisonné, compiled by Gale Research and published in 1983.
