Simon of Cyrene, the man the Gospels describe being pressed into service to carry Jesus's cross on the road to Calvary, is the figure at the center of this print. Nathaniel Currier issued it in New York around 1848, when his firm was turning out inexpensive lithographs on religious and moral themes for the home. Hand coloring, often done by workers in a production line, gave each copy slightly different tones. The print's bilingual title, with a Portuguese line beneath the English, is a detail worth noting, since many Currier sheets carried only English text. It is catalogued as number 3467 in the 1983 Currier & Ives catalog raisonné.
