Currier & Ives, the New York firm that turned out inexpensive lithographs for a mass market, produced this hand-colored sheet around 1867 to show Jesus blessing a gathering of children. Its subject, drawn from the Gospel accounts in which Jesus welcomes children and tells his followers to let them come to him, was a favorite theme in nineteenth-century American homes, where such pictures often hung in parlors or nurseries. Hand coloring, applied by workers after printing, let the publisher offer many versions of one design at modest cost. The print is catalogued in the Gale Research raisonné of the firm's output, which helps place it among the company's religious subjects.
