Nathaniel Currier's hand-colored lithograph shows the third of the fourteen Stations of the Cross, the moment Jesus stumbles under the weight of the cross on the road to Calvary. The bilingual title, with its Spanish line "terecira caida de Jesus," points to the Catholic devotional series it belonged to, which was meant to be followed step by step in churches and at home. Printed in New York around 1848, when Currier was building his business on inexpensive pictures for ordinary households, the sheet reflects a time when religious images were widely sold to families. It is catalogued as number 3489 in the Gale Research catalog raisonné of Currier & Ives work.
