Currier's hand-colored lithograph shows the moment in the Passion narrative when Jesus is stripped of his garments before the Crucifixion, a scene drawn from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The bilingual title, English and Spanish, reflects the print's sale to a market that included Spanish-speaking buyers, and it is one of the religious subjects Nathaniel Currier issued in the years when his shop was building a broad audience for inexpensive pictures. Its hand coloring was typically applied by workers who stenciled or brushed color over the black-and-white stone impression. The image is catalogued in the Gale Research catalog raisonné of Currier & Ives prints.
