Few religious prints in this collection carry a bilingual title, and this one pairs the English heading "Jesus and the Twelve Apostles" with the Spanish phrase "El Señor y sus Discípulos." The lithograph comes from Currier and Ives, the New York firm that from the 1830s into the early 1900s produced inexpensive colored prints for American homes. The firm was best known for scenes of landscape, domestic life and national subjects, but it also sold religious images like this one as affordable pictures for the wall. The Spanish wording is worth a closer look, since it shows how the firm's catalog could be adapted for different readers.
