The Currier & Ives firm, based in New York, issued this 1893 lithograph of the baptism of Jesus, a scene that Christian artists had returned to for centuries. The firm was the best-known American printmaker of the nineteenth century, producing inexpensive colored lithographs for a broad middle-class market, and its religious subjects were meant to hang in parlors and family rooms as much as in churches. Catalogued in the Gale Research raisonné of the firm's output, the print belongs to the late run of Currier & Ives work, when the company was shifting toward sentimental and devotional themes. Its image of John the Baptist at the River Jordan and the descending dove reflects that domestic, instructive purpose.
