The title appears in both French and Spanish, a sign that Currier's firm was aiming at Catholic buyers who read more than English. The image centers on the Sacred Heart of Mary, a devotion that spread widely through nineteenth-century Catholic practice and is often shown as a heart set apart by religious symbols. Published by Nathaniel Currier in New York around 1848, the lithograph was hand-colored after printing, so each copy varies slightly in tone. Gale Research's Currier & Ives catalog raisonné lists it as number 5727.
