Rather than showing the Crucifixion or the Resurrection, this hand-colored lithograph turns to the place of Christ's burial, the tomb the title calls sacred. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, traditionally built over that site, drew pilgrims for centuries, and images of it circulated widely in Europe and America. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that published the print, sold inexpensive colored lithographs to households across the country, so religious subjects like this one often hung in parlors as devotional pictures.
