The title comes from "Home, Sweet Home," the sentimental song John Howard Payne wrote for the 1823 opera *Clari*, with music by Henry Bishop. By the 1870s the phrase had become a stock emblem of domestic virtue, and Currier & Ives, the New York firm that sold inexpensive colored lithographs to a broad American public, returned to such sentiments often. The firm issued its prints in large numbers, and they reached ordinary parlors and kitchens across the country. This sheet is listed as number 3111 in the 1983 Gale Research catalog raisonné of the firm's work, a standard reference for identifying and dating its prints.
