Here Christ is shown leaving the earth, the moment the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles describe as taking place on the Mount of Olives, forty days after the Resurrection. Artists of this subject usually place the risen Christ above the gathered disciples, who look up in wonder while two figures in white robes appear beside them, as Acts 1:10-11 recounts. The Ascension became a major feast in the Western church and a favorite theme for altarpieces, frescoes and prints, since it marks the completion of Christ's earthly mission and the promise of his return. Compositions often turn on the contrast between the heavenly light above and the earthbound figures below.
