Few still lifes place winged fairies among a glass vase and a heap of fruit, so this picture stands apart from the flower and fruit arrangements that usually fill the genre. The still life tradition, especially in Northern Europe, used such objects to suggest the fragility of life and the passing of time, since glass breaks and fruit spoils. Fairy and angel figures, drawn from folklore and devotional art, were often added to these arrangements to shift the mood from the purely material toward the whimsical or the spiritual. Look closely at how the small figures are scaled against the fruit and glass, which shapes how the viewer reads the scene.
