Fairies drift over a still woodland pool here, their wings catching the light as children reach toward the water lilies below. The scene belongs to the late Victorian and Edwardian fascination with fairy painting, when illustrators and fine artists imagined the spirit world as a gentle extension of the English countryside. Pictures like this one turned the forest pond into a place of innocence and wonder, and their soft, detailed flowers and figures were popular in children's books and magazines of the period. Notice how the artist places the fairies and the children on the same plane, suggesting that the two worlds meet easily in the quiet of the woods.
