A winged bull hovering over a shoreline, with children and a fairy beside it, is an unusual mix of creatures that rarely appear together. The winged bull descends from ancient Near Eastern guardian figures, the lamassu, which European artists began to study and borrow from after archaeologists uncovered them in the 1840s and 1850s. Fairies and winged beings were favorite subjects in 19th-century illustration, where artists freely blended folklore, children's stories and religious symbolism. The scene reads less as a literal event than as an allegory of protection over a shore.
