This hand-colored lithograph takes the old idea of life's stages, from the cradle to the grave, and presents them as a sequence of ages of man. Published in New York by Currier & Ives, the firm sold inexpensive color prints to households across the country through much of the nineteenth century, and the subject reflects the popular taste for images about mortality and the passage of time. The hand coloring, added to each sheet after printing, was a common finishing step that kept these prints cheap while still making them lively on a parlor wall. The publication date is given only as a range, 1856 to 1907, so the print may have circulated over several decades.
