Currier & Ives drew on the closing chapter of the Book of Revelation for this hand-colored lithograph, whose title quotes the vision of the river of life flanked by the tree that bears twelve kinds of fruit. The print belongs to the firm's religious series, which the New York publishers issued in large numbers for households that wanted devotional images for the home. Its subject, a lush paradise of trees and flowing water, reflects the Victorian taste for scriptural scenes rendered in bright, carefully applied color. The firm's catalog raisonné, compiled by Gale Research, records it as entry 6619.
