Published by Currier & Ives in New York around 1872, this hand-colored lithograph is titled "The tree of temperance" and is listed as no. 6623 in the firm's catalog raisonné. Currier & Ives sold inexpensive colored prints to a broad public, and temperance was one of the moral themes it returned to, usually in allegorical form. By the early 1870s the temperance movement had grown into a national cause, with churches and reform societies urging Americans to give up alcohol. Pictures like this one used symbolism to make that message easy to take in at home.
