The title names a tree of death, and the sinner is set at its foot, so the print works as a moral allegory rather than a scene from daily life. The subjects listed for it, including demons, skeletons, angels and the deadly sins, show how Nathaniel Currier drew on religious warning imagery before his partnership with James Ives began in 1857. Cheap colored lithographs like this one were sold to ordinary households, where they served as pictorial sermons on judgment and the consequences of wrongdoing. The print is a useful record of how popular art framed sin and mortality for American viewers in the decades before the Civil War.
