The Tree of Life, the Christian" is a hand-colored lithograph issued under Nathaniel Currier's name in New York, before his partnership with James Ives began in 1857. Its title points to the familiar Christian image of the tree of life, a symbol of salvation drawn from Genesis and Revelation, which had long appeared in devotional art. Currier's firm sold inexpensive color prints to a broad middle-class public, and religious subjects like this one were popular for home walls, Sunday schools and family devotions. The catalog number in the record places it among the firm's documented religious works.
