The Tree of Intemperance is a hand-colored lithograph published by Nathaniel Currier in New York in 1849, when temperance was one of the most visible reform causes in American life. Its allegorical design shows a tree whose fruit and branches stand for the ruin that drink brought to families and communities, a common device in temperance art of the period. Currier, who ran a busy lithography shop and sold cheap prints to a broad public, used such moral scenes to reach ordinary households as well as the reform societies that promoted them. The print is catalogued in the Gale Research Currier & Ives catalog raisonné as number 6614.
