The title sets this print apart from the board's other religious images: "The Tree of Temperance" turns sobriety into a botanical allegory, with a tree standing in for the moral life the viewer is urged to cultivate. Nathaniel Currier published it in New York around 1849, when the temperance movement was reaching a broad audience through pledges, societies, and cheap printed images. Like many Currier lithographs of the period, this copy was colored by hand, a finishing step that varied from sheet to sheet, so surviving impressions can differ noticeably in tone. It shows how Currier turned a reform cause into affordable images for ordinary households.
