Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus make their way toward Egypt in this hand-colored lithograph, the subject taken from the Gospel of Matthew, where an angel warns Joseph to flee Herod's threat. The print was issued around 1847 and bears the publisher's line "lith. & pub. by J. Baillie" along with the number 281. Lithography made religious images like this one affordable for households and Sunday schools in the 1840s, and the hand coloring, applied to each sheet by hand, shows how such prints were finished to look more precious than their printed outlines alone.
