The title quotes the dying words of Jesus from Luke 23:46, "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit," and the print takes its subject from that moment of surrender. Published under Nathaniel Currier's name around 1850, before James Merritt Ives joined the firm in 1857, it is one of the many hand-colored lithographs the New York house sold to a mass audience at modest prices. Scenes like this were popular in middle-class parlors, where they offered devotional comfort in an era when death was a familiar presence in ordinary households.
