Butte, Montana, was one of the richest mining towns in the country by the turn of the twentieth century, and its churches were built and furnished with the wealth of copper. This design drawing records a proposed stained glass window for St. John's Church, a planning sketch that would have guided glaziers in cutting and leading the colored glass before any panel was installed. Such working drawings show the composition, figures and border patterns in full, and they reveal how a congregation chose its imagery and how closely the artist followed the architecture of the building.
