This design drawing is for a memorial window honoring Captain Sally Tompkins, the Richmond woman who ran a hospital for Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. In 1861 she opened a private infirmary in a house on Main Street, later known as the Robertson Hospital, and in 1861 Jefferson Davis commissioned her as a captain so that the hospital could stay under military authority. She is often remembered as the only woman to hold a commission as a captain in the Confederate army. A preparatory drawing like this one shows how a stained glass artist planned the composition, figure, and color scheme before cutting and leading the glass.
