Saint Mark is shown here with his traditional attendant, the winged lion, in a design drawing made for a stained glass window. Such drawings were the working plans from which glaziers cut and leaded the colored glass, so the sketch records the artist's composition before any glass was chosen. Church window design of this kind flourished in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when many parish churches commissioned new glass for their walls. The lion, a symbol drawn from Mark's Gospel tradition, is a useful detail to watch for, since it helps identify the saint at a glance across a whole nave of images.
