A staged tableau from the Arctic regions exhibit at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, this stereograph shows figures identified as Esquimaux struggling with a polar bear. The fair marked the centennial of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase and filled its grounds with displays of distant peoples and landscapes, and dioramas like this one turned the Arctic into a theatrical spectacle for paying visitors. The Whiting View Company of Cincinnati issued the view as a stereo card, and its record of a constructed scene shows how popular entertainment of the era presented northern peoples to the public. Today the image reveals as much about exhibition practices as about life in the Arctic.
