Among the last of a disappearing race" is how this stereograph's title frames its subject: Inuit people posed with a team of dogs, a stock image of Arctic travel. The Louisiana Purchase Exposition opened in St. Louis in 1904 to mark the centennial of the 1803 land deal, and its anthropology displays brought Indigenous peoples from around the world to the fairgrounds. Stereograph cards like this one, issued by the American Stereoscopic Company in New York, carried such scenes into parlors across the country. The caption reflects the assumption of the period that these cultures were vanishing, an idea the people pictured did not share.
