Rising in pale marble, the slender figures named in the title are the focus of this stereograph rather than the visitors who passed beneath them. The view comes from the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, the 1904 world's fair held in St. Louis to mark the 1803 land deal that nearly doubled the nation's size. Sculpture was a prominent feature of the fairgrounds in Forest Park, and the decorative and monumental pieces there were meant to show the fair's ambitions. Printed as a stereograph, the scene was designed to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the white forms a sense of depth and solidity.
