Camels, not carriages, are the focus of this view: a rider is being offered a seat on one of the animals along the Cairo Street, a reconstructed Egyptian thoroughfare on the midway of the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis. Fairgoers could stroll its replica shops and streets and take short rides, an exotic novelty that drew crowds to the fair's entertainment strip. The Whiting View Company of Cincinnati issued this card around 1905, after the fair had closed, so it served as a souvenir of an attraction visitors had only recently experienced. Stereo cards like this were sold in large numbers and viewed through a stereoscope, which made distant places feel close at hand.
